What're the Best Ways to Make a Decanter Centrifuge?

Do you still remember that we Solvedrilling shared a post called “How to drill oil at your backyard”? En…today, we will share an article about how to make a centrifuge at your home.

As we all know that centrifuge is used wildly in many fields, such as in oil and gas drilling field, we will need decanter centrifuge; while in medical industry, we also need centrifuge. So, how to make a mini centrifuge just at your own home backyard?
Generally speaking, centrifuges are used by biologists around the world to separate out different parts of a heterogeneous liquid mixture; however, they're often not feasible for the casual scientist. Using a few household items and some elbow grease, you can make your own.

When you want to make a centrifuge yourself at home, please follow the following steps.

Remove one paddle from your hand-powered egg beater. This is necessary so that your plastic tubing doesn't get tangled as you're cranking it.

Cut a length of polyethylene (PE) tubing to fit the amount of liquid you wish to separate.

Fill the tubing with the liquid in question and tape it onto the remaining beater paddle with electrical tape. Taping the tube farther down the paddle with help you harness the maximum amount of kinetic energy with each turn, separating the liquid faster.

Crank the egg beater to spin the paddle and the tubing. Depending on how much liquid you're separating and what type it is, you may have to adjust your spinning time. For blood centrifuging, a time of 10 minutes is fairly standard.


After you finished the above four steps, you will get a mini centrifuge at your home. In our oil and gas drilling work or companies, mud tanks are always used as storage for drilling mud. Of course, as for the special feature of the mud, the mud tank needs to be cleaned and they require specialized equipment to do so. So, how to finish this work? This is done to bind the waste mud with the cuttings and make the resultant waste suitable for waste handling. It also makes the waste mud less toxic and more appropriate for land burial.

Bury the used drilling mud or utilize landfill services. Burial of drilling mud is at times misunderstood. It is not acceptable to simply collapse the walls of a drilling well over used drilling mud and cuttings. Instead, care must be taken to assure proper placement, moisture content and the absence of toxic metals. Many times landfill services are used in place of burial as a more suitable option.

Examine possibilities for beneficial reuse. Many drilling rigs have systems to capture spilled oil on the rig itself and reuse this previously lost fluid in additional drilling processes. Other types of recycling initiatives include the use of drill cuttings -- which may contain some drilling mud -- for use in road paving, construction fill, concrete aggregate products, and restoration of damaged wetlands and for use as fuel. All of these beneficial reuse options are available only after processing of the cutting and mud waste.

Understanding the Centrifugal Pump Thoroughly

First, How Does a Centrifugal Pump Work?

“A centrifugal pump uses an impeller as the primary source for its pumping action then the impeller is similar to a fan with a housing that has one small intake and a larger output, which is simply an opening. The impeller is then connected to a spinning rotor that must be moved, either with human or mechanical power, in order to displace fluid, and for the impeller is inside a housing that lets fluid escape to a discharge pipe, where the fluid is pushed after being displaced by the impeller.”

Second, How to Prime a Centrifugal Pump?

“Centrifugal pumps utilize centrifugal force to push water through plumbing systems. A centrifugal pump spins an impeller at fast speeds which sucks in water, then pushes the water through slots or groves to create water flow. Centrifugal pumps need water in order to function correctly. Priming a centrifugal pump prepares the pump for operation before it is turned on. Priming a centrifugal pump requires filling the pump's casing with water so the impeller does not suck air on start up.”

The Following are the Instructions for Centrifugal Pump.

1Unscrew the pipe or hose leading into the centrifugal pump and remove it. Insert a water hose into the centrifugal pump's casing through the opening left when the pipe or hose was removed.

2Turn on the water hose to start filling the centrifugal pump's casing with water. Allow the hose to run until water begins to spill back out of the casing through the hole.

3Shut off the water hose and screw the centrifugal pump's pipe or hose onto the casing. Start the pump to test for correct prime. If the pump does not catch prime, repeat the case filling process until enough water resides in the case for the pump to prime correctly.
